New Castle Youth Police Academy - Summer 2026

The New Castle Police Dept. is proud to present our 2nd Annual YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY

Ages 10-14 who attend School or Home-School in New Castle

Lunch Bunch - Kids' Kitchen on Wednesdays - Summer 2026

LUNCH BUNCH -  Each Wednesday we will gather in the New Castle Community Center Kitchen to make lunch for ourselves. We will talk about nutrition and balanced meals. We will practice setting the table and proper table etiquette. We will clean up our mess in the kitchen and do the dishes.  If we have time, we will plan the menu and shopping list for the next Wednesday meal.

Harcourt Fishing Derby - Spring 2026

17th Annual Youth Fishing Derby:

Come join Harcourt Fly Fishing 3G for their annual Fishing Derby

on Saturday, May 2nd at Alder Park Pond

Be sure to arrive at 9:30 am to check in. Bring your own fishing gear* (*a limited number of poles will be available to those who do not have their own)  BAIT will be provided.

5 and younger - (Learn-to-Fish clinic is at 10am) Fish from 10:30am-11:30am

2026 Lego League - Competition Series - Annual 2026

Calling all builders!  Our LEGO League 2026 competitions are scheduled!

New Castle Community Center - 423 W. Main

Our Lego League Competition Series is your chance to show off your building skills, Lego knowledge and creativity! Competition will take place every third Thursday of the month starting January 2026. Building will take place at the New Castle Community Center from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm. Registration is $10 and required beforehand.

We supply all building materials to be used in the competition.

Structures will remain property of New Castle Recreation.

Individual builders will be judged in two categories based on age, 5-8 years and 9-12 years.

Individual contestants will have one hour to build a masterpiece to present to the judges.

The judges will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place in each age group. Register your Lego Lover today!

2026 Adult Indoor Pickleball Session II - Spring 2026

From March 3rd to May 7th, we invite you to join our Pickleball Open Play sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at Elk Creek Elementary School. The drop-in fee is just $10 per session, and we offer a 10-session punch pass for $80. Punch passes do not have an expiration and roll forward as needed to all future Indoor Pickleball Sessions.

The Hogback Hustle 5k benefits the New Castle Recreation Department and the Youth Scholarship Program.

The 5k race starts at the New Castle City Market parking lot and finishes at Burning Mountain Park downtown. Be prepared to travel back to your vehicle after the festivities as the race does not begin and end at the same location!

Cost: $30.00 per person, $35.00 after  May 1st

The first 100 to register will get a race shirt

Plant Based Cooking with Brian Rossiter - Summer 2026

Attendees should bring at least 4 to-go containers to bring home left-overs!

June Session: Classes will begin with a short presentation demystifying the health benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet followed by hands-on cooking. We will focus on simple, familiar ingredients like fruits, vegetables, legumes, leafy greens and whole grains. Nuts and seeds will not be included. Recipes will not include animal products, added sugar, oil, flour, soy, meat substitutes or nutritional yeast.

July Session:  Students will explore diverse cuisines from around the world. Ingredients will include fruits, vegetables, legumes, greens and whole grains. No animal-based products will be used. Some ingredients may be new to the students, offering a fun and flavorful culinary adventure.

Little Roots Adventure Program with Caroline Long - Summer 2026

Little Roots Adventures:  One week - Monday through Friday 9am-1pm

New Castle drop-off locations are designated each day. The group will head out on that day's adventure promptly at 9:15am. Don't be late! Each adventure will end up at the New Castle Community Center and the kids will be ready for pick-up at 1pm.

Bring a lunch, two snacks, and a water bottle. Wear proper outdoor shoes and attire.

Parents are encouraged to stop by to meet our instructor, Caroline Long, prior to the program start. Meet-&-Greet at the New Castle Community Center 423 W. Main on Wednesday, June 3rd 6pm for one hour.

Little Roots Adventures is a week-long, nature-based program designed to help children slow down, explore, and connect with the natural world. Each day includes a balance of guided mindfulness activities, nature exploration, creative arts, and free play. 

Through hands-on experiences, such as learning about local plants, nature crafts, and group activities, children are encouraged to build confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging outdoors.

This program is intentionally small and thoughtfully guided to ensure each child feels safe, supported, and engaged. All activities are led by a certified guide with training in Wilderness First Aid and CPR, with a strong focus on safety and emotional well-being.

Parents can also register to join in as tag-alongs with the group after passing a background check. To initiate a background check, please send your full name and birthdate to Recreation Director Kelley Cox kcox@newcastlecolorado.org

Parents will be required to sign a liability waiver online and each day at drop-off.
